We have heard it all on what and how things get into the garbage disposal. We’ve seen things from bones to shot glasses after a long party to pebbles from a fish tank. Many of our Longwood customers think when this happens that they have to call a Longwood plumber to replace the garbage disposal. This is nine times out of ten not true and most people can fix the issue them selves most of the time it is a simple plumbing repair that many people are just not sure what to do. Ok so lets say you drop a shot glass in your disposal and don’t realize it, and next you dump your leftover appetizers, then you turn on your garbage disposal and then the next thing you hear is a loud bang and then a humming noise that sounds like a disaster. Here is what you need to do:
- Turn off the garbage disposal as this will prevent the unit from overheating.
- With gloves try to remove all loose debris from garbage disposal.
- Get an allan key or a garbage disposal wrench and in the bottom center of the unit there is a slot, then insert it into the slot.
- While holding the unit twist the allan key either clockwise or counter clockwise. It will more than likely take some force.
- Once you free the object, the allen key should spin freely.
- Next carefully stick your hand in the garbage disposal again and retrieve the remaining debris that was loosened from the process.
- If you have no power to the unit after, the chances are that the reset button tripped. If so, just reset it.
- Reset button is located underneath the unit and is red in color. Press and test unit.
