People often put grease, rice, and pretty much everything you can think of that should not go down your plumbing system into their kitchen sink. Grease is the worst for your plumbing. Most people do not know that if their garbage disposal is not functioning for a long time it will clog. We have had a lot of calls lately about clogged sinks, but the plumber discovered at the root of the problem that the garbage disposal has not worked for some time. Soap and soap scum are very damaging to your plumbing. While hair is surely the main culprit, soap, and soap scum are right up there for causing shower clogs. Usually, there is something deeper in the toilet than you think that is causing the clog. We have many customers who say that nothing else is backed up, so it has to be in the toilet. We mostly see this situation in older homes. Vegetation is a very surprising thing because roots can grow where you’d never expect. If you want to try to unclog your toilet yourself, try these simple DIY tips:
- Gather your needed supplies: rubber gloves, plunger, bucket, towels or rags, dish soap, baking soda and vinegar.
- Protect the area by laying down towels or rags around the base of the toilet to catch any water that may spill.
- Determine whether the toilet is completely clogged or if the water is draining slowly.
- If the toilet is clogged, plunge the toilet by placing it over the drain hole pushing it down firmly, and pulling it up sharply.
- If plunging doesn’t work, add hot water to the bowl. Let it sit for a few minutes and then attempt to plunge it again.
- If the plunger and hot water don’t work, you can try using a plumbing snake or auger. Insert the snake into the drain and turn the handle clockwise to break up or retrieve the clog.
- Another option is to add a small amount of dish soap to the toilet bowl and follow it with hot water. Let it sit for a while and then attempt to plunge again.
- If the clog is not severe, you can try a natural solution. Pour about a cup of baking soda into the bowl, followed by a cup of vinegar. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, and then flush. This combination may help break up minor clogs.

- Grease: While grease is liquid when it is hot, it will then cool and turn into a thick waxy substance which will over time build up in the pipe and harden like a rock. If you add drain cleaners to the line this can make things even worse.
- Stringy Veggies: Stringy veggies can wreak havoc on your plumbing. They don’t break down and will build up in the line. The garbage disposal also does not chop stringy veggies up fine enough, and this can cause your lines to build up.

If the clog is located past the sidewalk, most cities will come out and clean it out. However, some cities require you to hire a local plumber to clean out the drain. If there are roots or a break at the city clean-out, they will fix the break, and you are not responsible. We have seen firsthand that a customer has a drain clog, and they have never had a problem with their drainage. So when we snake the line and pull nothing back, we ask, “Have you recently changed toilet paper?” Most of the time the answer is yes. The single-ply toilet paper is less likely to clog your drains. Once you flush the paper, it starts to break down immediately which is a good thing. However, most people like thick, soft toilet paper and this is where you have a problem. These are some reasons that you would want to replace your water main: 1. Copper pipe: If your water main is piped in copper you should think about replacement because you will have constant plumbing leaks on the water main and constant repairs will cost more in the long run than to just replace the main water line. 2. Water Pressure & Leaks

If the shower valve has not been used for a long time, the balancing pin gets stuck and will not let hot water through. The height of the water tower and the weight of the water create the pressure to push the water into your plumbing system. If you live close to one of those water towers, your water pressure will be high. The farther you live from the tower, the less pressure you will have. As the water heats up, the minerals in the water stick together and sink to the bottom of the water heater tank. Chlorine from hard water can make your water piping leak and wear out quickly. Many customers feel it is just a washer causing the problem, or they think it will just unscrew and the plumber just has to screw it back on. This is far from the truth. Many customers think that changing the shower head or tub spout will fix this problem, but this is not the case. The place that stops the water from dripping is in the valve of the shower where the handle is located. On newer valves, it is a cartridge assembly. When this fails, your tub will drip, and if it’s only a shower, it will drip from the shower head. In older homes, it is usually a bad seal washer or both. Shower pan leaks can be caused by any of the following problems:
- Improper installation
- Cracks or damage in the shower pan
- Faulty waterproofing membrane
- Loose or damaged grout or tiles
- Leaking shower fixture connections
- Clogged drain

- Inadequate slope toward the drain

- Broken pipe outside or under your home and you have broken pipe and don’t realize it, could cause low-pressure issues.

Water Heaters
The main reason is sediment. Depending on where you live in the country, the problem could be worse. Florida happens to have the worst water in the United States. First, you need to find the sticker with the serial number and the model number. This is usually in the lower section of the water heater and just above the lower access for the thermostat and element. Once you’ve located the tag with the serial number, you can decode it. If you look at the serial number, the year and month it was made are encoded in the serial number. It varies from the manufacturer as to where they put the years. Let’s discuss the inlet and outlet of your water heater. The line on the right side of the water heater is the cold inlet. This brings the water into the tank. Your water heater valve is always on the cold side, and if you ever leak, this is where you shut it off. However, it will only shut down the hot water in your house. Tankless water heaters last about 20 years, which is longer than tank heaters. They are also great because they can be mounted on walls and save you a lot of space. Storage water heaters last for 10-15 years and are fairly inexpensive. The tanks allow you to have hot water on demand. Most people like hot water, but the answer is that your water heater should be set at 120 degrees. At this temperature, you should have ample hot water, and it is still safe enough not to burn you. Many customers think that by calling a plumber they can come out and make the temperature hotter than the recommended factory setting. This is not true. It somewhat depends on the brand name. A low-quality water heater will not last as long as a better-quality water heater, but most of the time it is due to a lack of maintenance on the water heater. Over the years sediment builds up, fills the bottom of the tank up, and slowly starts to ruin the efficiency of the heater. Then once the sediment settles over the bottom element, it begins to affect the element. The element needs to be surrounded by water to stay cool. If sediment is surrounding it, then it won’t be able to keep cool causing it to overheat and go bad causing the upper element to work harder. - Turn the power off to the water heater, which is usually in the breaker box. If it is gas, turn the gas valve off.
- Turn the water supply valve off as this will stop the flow of water into your heater.
- Try to drain the water heater even though the water is shut off. The tank may continue to leak because it usually holds 40 or more gallons of water, and if the tank is cracked, it will leak all 40 gallons onto the floor. This can cause water damage, so attach your hose to the bottom drain line to do this.
- Pull the relief pin-up as this will allow air into the tank and help it drain faster.

A natural gas water heater is much more efficient than an electric water heater. If you have natural gas or have the opportunity to install it, then do it. It’s well worth the money spent. Yes, gas appliances are usually more expensive than electric, but they last longer and are more efficient which saves you money in the long run. The hybrid water heater works off a heat pump system and is supposed to be a lot more energy efficient. The 50-gallon standard heater uses 4879 kWh per year which is usually about $600 a year or $50 a month, but the hybrid water heater uses about 1890 kWh per year at about $20 a month which is about a 62% savings. There are a few things you can do to help out the plumber to know what they’ll need to fix. Check if the garbage disposal is leaking when it is being used. Often when customers get involved in the faucet installation, they see it is not so easy. Many kitchen sinks are very tight. Many people think the dishwasher is an easy plumbing job, but this is not always the case. We run into a lot of dishwashers that are installed incorrectly, and the customers don’t even know until months down the road.
The problem is that when the drain is run, some people will keep the drain low and come up to the disposal where the dishwasher drain tie-in is located. When using the garbage disposal, food particles and dirty water can make their way down the dishwasher discharge line and sometimes back into the dishwasher, causing stagnant water and bad odor. In an older home, the plumbing is usually installed with copper piping and is only one and a half inches in diameter. In newer homes, the drainage is usually two inches or larger. Because the piping is copper, the fittings are usually very short and have sharp bends, whereas in newer homes the fittings are more of a long sweep turn.
