If you enjoy home updates, learning new things, and getting your hands dirty, DIY projects are likely for you. Fortunately, you don’t have to be an expert DIYer for every task. For instance, installing a new dishwasher is pretty straightforward. For reference, Drain Genie Plumbing Services put together a guide to do just that. Keep reading to learn more.
Tools and Preparation
Installing a dishwasher doesn’t require several out-of-the-ordinary gadgets. To the contrary, you likely already have these basic tools:
– Drill and screwdriver set
– Level
– Tape measure
– Dishwasher installation kit (available at hardware stores)
– Wrench or pliers
– Pencil or marker
– Screws
– Hose clamps
Prep the Area
Once your tools are gathered for your plumbing project, it’s time to prep the area. First, clear out the space underneath where the dishwasher will go. For the door to open and close properly, you’ll need about 24 inches of clearance in front of the unit. If your dishwasher is going next to a garbage disposal, make sure it’s unplugged before you start.
Next, use the tape measure to find the center of the hot water line and mark it with a pencil or marker. Then, do the same for the cold water line. These will be your guidelines for drilling the holes for the water supply lines. Finally, you’re ready to install the new dishwasher.
Dishwasher Installation Steps
You’ve got your tools and the prep work is done. Now it’s time to install your new dishwasher!
1. Affix the brackets that came in your installation kit to the underside of the countertop. The brackets should be placed about an inch from the back wall and level with the front edge of the countertop. Use screws to secure the bracket in place.
2. Carefully slide the dishwasher into place. Make sure that the lines you marked earlier for the water supply lines are lined up with the holes in the back of the dishwasher.
3. Use a drill to create holes through the countertop. Then, use the screws that came with your installation kit to secure the dishwasher to the brackets.
4. Install the dishwasher drain hose. First, connect one end of the hose to the dishwasher’s drainage port. Then, route the hose up and over to the sink’s drainage system. Use a wrench or pliers to tighten all of the connections.
5. Install the water supply lines. Connect one end of each line to the appropriate shut-off valve (hot water to the hot water valve and cold water to the cold water valve). Then, route the lines through the holes you drilled earlier and connect them to the dishwasher’s water inlets. Use hose clamps to secure the connections.
6. Turn on the shut-off valves and check for leaks. If there are any, tighten the connections until they stop.
7. Finally, level the dishwasher by adjusting the feet at the bottom. Once it’s level, use a pencil or marker to make a reference line on the side of the dishwasher. This will help you line up the unit for future cleaning when you need to move it.
